What exactly is Christmas all about? Each year we decorate, shop, wrap and give gifts away. We attend church, sing carols, eat too much, and exhaust ourselves with all of the extra things to do during the “holiday” season. I ask you, how does this relate to celebrating the Savior of the World’s birthday?
What is Christmas?
Christmas is, at its heart, a story of love—quiet, humble, and world-changing. It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, but more than that, it is the reminder that God chose to come near. Not in power or prestige, but in the fragile form of a baby, born into an ordinary family in an ordinary place.
In a season now often filled with lights, shopping lists, and full calendars, the true meaning of Christmas can feel easy to miss. Yet its message remains steady: hope has come. The story tells us that in a world marked by brokenness, uncertainty, and longing, God did not remain distant. He stepped into the very mess of humanity, bringing with Him peace, grace, and redemption.
He is the Messiah, Christ the Lord
As recorded in Gospel of Luke, the angel’s words capture the heart of Christmas: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11)
Christmas is God With Us
Christmas is about presence. God with us. It’s the assurance that we are not alone in our struggles or our joys. The same God who entered a manger understands our everyday lives—the quiet mornings, the heavy hearts, the moments we celebrate and the ones we barely make it through. This is what makes Christmas so deeply personal. It’s not just a historical event; it’s an invitation into relationship.
It is also a season of light. The image of a single star guiding weary travelers speaks to something we all need—a direction, a reminder that even in darkness, there is something steady to follow. Christmas tells us that light doesn’t just exist despite the darkness; it enters into it and overcomes it.
Christmas Giving
At its core, Christmas is about giving—not just the exchange of wrapped presents, but the giving of self. Love expressed through generosity, kindness, and grace. The greatest gift was not placed under a tree but laid in a manger. And that gift continues to shape how we live, calling us to reflect that same love to others.
For many, Christmas is also about gathering—around tables, in living rooms, in church pews. It’s about stories shared, traditions remembered, and new memories made. But even in seasons when gatherings look different or hearts feel tender, the meaning of Christmas does not change. It is steady, rooted not in circumstance but in truth.
Ultimately, Christmas is about hope fulfilled and hope still alive. It reminds us that God keeps His promises, often in ways we don’t expect. And it invites us to slow down, to look beyond the noise, and to rediscover the wonder of a Savior who came not just for the world—but for each of us.
