A Journey through Provence: Viking River Cruise from Avignon to Lyon
A Journey through Provence: Viking River Cruise from Avignon to Lyon, with an Extension to Geneva
Embarking on a Viking River Cruise through the picturesque landscapes of Provence is a voyage that intertwines history, culture, and the unparalleled beauty of southern France.
What made this journey especially memorable wasn’t just the places we visited—it was the people we shared them with. This trip marked a new chapter as we traveled with dear friends, Pam and Steve, who are newly retired and eager to see more of the world. Steve and Jay go back many years, having attended the same high school before eventually working together, while Pam and I became friends in the 1990s when our husbands’ careers first crossed paths. There’s something uniquely special about exploring new destinations with friends whose history is woven into your own. The laughter, shared memories, and anticipation of making new ones made this adventure unlike any other.

Our journey begins in Nice, explores the glamorous French Riviera, delves into the medieval heart of Avignon, and culminates in the gastronomic hub of Lyon. To cap off this extraordinary adventure, we spent two delightful days in Geneva, Switzerland.

A Sojourn in Nice and the French Riviera
Our adventure commenced with a delightful three-day stay in Nice. Nestled along the azure waters of the Mediterranean, Nice offers an irresistible blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication. We wandered through the narrow streets of Vieux Nice, sampling fresh local produce at the bustling Cours Saleya market and marveling at the Baroque architecture.

A short drive took us to Monaco, a tiny principality brimming with opulence. The stunning views from the Prince’s Palace, the extravagance of the Monte Carlo Casino, and the serene beauty of the Japanese Gardens were highlights of our visit. I was especially enamored with this town because of our own Princess Grace’s tragic story. While she was popular before my time, I’ve always admired her beauty and sense of style.
In Antibes, we explored the enchanting old town and the Picasso Museum, housed in the ancient Château Grimaldi. The marina, filled with luxurious yachts, and the scenic coastal walks provided a perfect balance of art and nature.
Cannes, famous for its film festival, did not disappoint. We strolled along La Croisette, with its line-up of designer boutiques and palm-fringed beaches, and climbed the steps to the historic Le Suquet district, offering panoramic views of the bay.

Avignon: The City of Popes
Leaving the coast behind, we traveled to Avignon, our embarkation point for the Viking River Cruise. This city, steeped in history, is renowned for the majestic Palais des Papes (Pope’s Palace). A guided tour revealed the grandeur of this Gothic fortress, once the seat of Western Christianity. The palace’s intricate frescoes, towering chapels, and secretive passages captivated our imagination.
Wine Tasting at Châteauneuf-du-Pape
No visit to Provence would be complete without indulging in its world-class wines. A short excursion from Avignon brought us to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We wandered through the sun-drenched vineyards, learning about the unique terroir that gives these wines their distinctive character. The tasting session was a sensory delight, with notes of dark berries, spices, and earthy undertones mingling on our palates.

Visiting a Truffle Farm in Cartevais
One of the most memorable experiences of our time in Cartevais was visiting a charming truffle farm, where we met Maestro, the sweetest and most talented truffle dog. After enjoying a delicious lunch featuring local flavors, we headed into the orchard with Maestro and his handler to watch him work his magic. With his nose to the ground and tail wagging, Maestro eagerly searched among the trees for the hidden treasures beneath the soil. Watching him discover truffles right before our eyes made the experience feel wonderfully authentic—and gave us a whole new appreciation for the art of truffle hunting!

Ardèche: A Personal Touch
In the rolling hills of Ardèche, we were welcomed into the charming home of Frances, a local resident with a passion for hospitality. Her quaint abode, set amidst lush greenery, was a haven of tranquility. Frances shared stories of the region’s history and culture, including housing French Revolutionaries during WWII; all while her cat Manuel provided a touch of whimsical hospitality during her storytelling. This personal encounter offered a unique perspective on life in rural France, away from the usual tourist trails.

Tournon Steam Train: A Ride through Time
As our cruise meandered towards Lyon, we disembarked for a nostalgic ride on the Tournon Steam Train. This historic locomotive chugged through the verdant landscapes of the Rhône Valley, with its rhythmic clatter evoking a bygone era. The scenic journey, passing through tunnels and over bridges, provided stunning vistas of the river and surrounding countryside.

Lyon: The Culinary Capital
Our voyage culminated in Lyon, often hailed as the gastronomic capital of France. The city’s vibrant food scene, from bustling markets to Michelin-starred restaurants, promised a feast for the senses. We explored the traboules (hidden passageways) of Vieux Lyon, sampled local delicacies at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, and soaked in the lively atmosphere of the Presqu’île district.
Extension to Geneva: Swiss Serenity
After our enriching cruise through Provence, we extended our journey with a two-day visit to Geneva, Switzerland. Nestled at the southern tip of Lake Geneva, this cosmopolitan city offered a serene contrast to our French adventures.
Our city tour of Geneva included visits to the iconic Jet d’Eau, the towering water fountain that graces the lake, and the United Nations Office, highlighting Geneva’s pivotal role in international diplomacy. We strolled through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, marveling at the St. Pierre Cathedral and the Maison Tavel, the oldest house in the city.

A sightseeing cruise on Lake Geneva was one of the highlights of our stay. The tranquil waters and the backdrop of the Swiss Alps created a picturesque setting as we sailed past charming lakeside villages and historic castles. The cruise offered a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with opportunities to disembark and explore towns like Montreux and Lausanne.
Geneva holds a significant place in Christian history as the center of the Protestant Reformation under John Calvin in the 16th century. Our tour guide, Augusto, helped make this city one of the most memorable of the entire trip. Often called the “Protestant Rome,” the city became a refuge for those fleeing religious persecution and a hub for theological teaching, Bible study, and the printing of Reformation writings that spread throughout Europe. Walking its historic streets today, it’s easy to imagine the profound spiritual conversations and courageous convictions that helped shape the course of Christianity.

As we stood near Reformation Wall, our guide, Augusto, brought those centuries to life, reminding us that the influence of Geneva extended far beyond Switzerland, reaching churches and believers around the world.

This Viking River Cruise from Avignon to Lyon, enhanced with an extension to Geneva, was more than a journey; it was an immersion into the rich tapestry of southern France and the serene beauty of Switzerland. From the sun-kissed shores of the French Riviera to the historic heart of Avignon, the pastoral charm of Ardèche, the culinary delights of Lyon, and the tranquil elegance of Geneva, every moment was infused with the essence of European splendor. If you’re seeking a travel experience that combines cultural depth, scenic beauty, and personal connections, this cruise offers an unforgettable adventure.
